Puerto Rico!

Wednesday, Feb 29 2012:
Flying out of Bloomington to Puerto Rico!  Woke up super early at 4:30 and slept on the first flight. Wandered around the Atlanta airport and had lunch before our flight. Mom had an extra cup she had for diet coke- so when were got it on the plane, she dumped what the flight attendant gave her into her cup, just a few minutes later, she asked if she could have more. Well she got caught because the flight attendant looked at her and said "did you eat your ice?". We thought it was hilarious! She got caught! Slept again! Landing soon- 85 degrees!!

We rented an apartment for the week and had Leo pick us up and take us to the apartment! OCEAN FRONT VIEW to say the least! Amazing!!!
Where we stayed!

Went to the supermarket and got some supplies, came back, changed into shorts, made a drink, and then walked down the beach to El San Juan Hotel and checked it out. Saw a cruise ship leaving port in the evening and stopped by a local beach bar and had a pina colada and a rum punch! Walked back to the apartment to get all unpacked, showered, and some rest after being up so early for our travel day! We kept having so much trouble with the key every time we tried to get into our apartment! Mom was worried we were going to get locked out because we tried so many times and it took us like 5 minutes each time to get into the apartment! We could hear the waves breaking on the shore which was nice!

I could get used to this!

There was also someone in the apartment near us that we could see into his room, and we were confused the entire night because he kept rocking in this chair for seriously HOURS! And the entire time we thought there was two people, and they were synchronized doing some random workout/routine on TV and you turn your head, rub your stomach, etc. We have NO idea what he was doing! Bizarre. We went to bed, and after not being able to fall asleep, we looked out the window again and he was STILL doing the same thing!!! We were amazed and confused! We did figure out that there was a mirror on the entire wall because we there was no way two people could synchronize that for so long! So weirdddddddddd.

Thursday, March 1st:
Woke up and so happy to be in Puerto Rico! Sunny warm weather! Tropical! Had our breakfast, got ready, and called Leo before leaving to tell him we had been having trouble with key and he managed to tell us we were using the wrong lock the entire time! Even though he showed us the day before and used the one we had been using! Mom and I both were sore for some reason! Our legs were sore, guess because we walked quite a long way on the beach in a bit deeper sand than normal!
Trying to be Puerto Rican

After breakfast, we walked down the street down to Walgreens to get a few things and then continued walking and exploring the area. Found some restaurants and gift shops and kept walking. Ended up on the beach again and eventually walked back to our apartment to have some drinks, snacks, and played some Yahtzee!!
Rainbow!

Need to get all rested up! Took some beach chairs down to the beach and enjoyed the sun!

Sun beginning to set
Got ready for dinner and walked downstairs and talked to the security guard to see if we should take a bus or a taxi. It was after six so she wasn't sure about the buses still running. While we were asking, a lady drove up and had to get keys from an apartment in our building, and she overheard us talking and offered to drive us down to where we wanted to have dinner. She was really nice and suggested a place even and dropped us off there, at Metropolo! An authentic Puerto Rican restaurant! We even drove past a cock fighting arena!! At the restaurant we had some nice appetizers and shared a typical Puerto Rican dish; Monfongo which is mashed plantains with your choice of meat, so we chose chicken of course! After our nice meal, we took a taxi home and the Illini game was on ESPN down here so we are watching that now!

Mofongo!
Friday March 2nd:
Woke up and went right to the beach! Out there for over an hour! Didn't want to get too much sun! Played some yahtzee, had some lunch in our apartment and got ready to go to Old San Juan!!! Walked down the street and took the local bus there! Took about 30 minutes with the route we took and once there they dropped us off right at the cruise ship port! Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas was in the port for the day! We walked around, explored some!
Another view from our apt! We loved it!

Another kite surfer!

We love cruises too!

Old Ship!

Bienvenidos a Puerto Rico!

Went to the fort! Really nice actually! Much bigger than I thought!!
The fortress walls went very very far through the city!

Everyone flying kites!

Looks like Sicily to me!

Start of the fort!

Colorful buildings!

Really cool!

Look how large the area is!

And a cemetery inside it!

HAD TO!

Gorgeous!

View out the right side

Well that's one place to be buried

Love the green!

More walls!

Woo!!

Quite unique!

And beautiful!

Not a bad lookout spot!

Giant walls!

There was a path that went all the way around!

Yes, still more walls!

From there we saw what we thought was the Bacardi factory from Old San Juan! So after exploring more, we went to the port and bought two tickets over to the island it's on. Ferry went every three minutes so we didn't want to go right away, waked around a bit more and had some chicken nachos at a local place! Much needed little snack!

After that we took the ferry over to the island! Met a couple from Washington DC who were really nice! We asked them what they had done so far and we were staying at the same area, took a bus downtown, going to the Bacardi factory! We got a kick out of that. Really nice couple, so we shared a taxi once on the island to Bacardi Factory. We were already late and missed the last tour which was fine, because we didn't really want to do the tour and we talked to people after and said it wasn't that exciting! Haha. We did however get two free drinks each, and actually even more because Scott didn't drink alcohol! The bottles were quite cheap there too! Cool to go to the actual factory where it was made! Nice little unexpected trip!

Excited to be there!

Free? Yes please!

Delicious.

We took the taxi back to the ferry and the other couple wanted to have some fish for dinner so we said our goodbyes! We then met two other couples on the ferry on the way back, two from NY and two from Vancouver! The two from Vancouver were going on a cruise the next day for the first time and were kind of nervous about it!! We had a good chat and then said our goodbyes! Mom and I went to Senor Frogs a bit later and we saw the couple from Vancouver!! Mom and I got the yard stick drink!!! Giant!!! Sat down and enjoyed the atmosphere, listened to some music, and the MC talked to us and he was from Illinois as well! He flies between St. Thomas and Puerto Rico each week for his job! He knew where Champaign was and he said people from Chicago call it Cham-pimple!! We had never hard that before!!! Hilarious!! We got along well with him and he ended up getting us two free drinks!!
These signs were hilarious!

Having fun!

After we decided we should take the bus back to Isla Verde- our area where we are staying, we walked to the bus terminal and guess who we ran into again!?!? The couple from Washington DC! We obviously chatted a lot more, got on our bus and eventually made it home! In just 15 minutes this time! A much faster bus route! Great day here in Puerto Rico! Glad to see more of the island!!

Back at the apartment now! That guy is still rocking in his chair! Every single night! With something around his neck and he keeps rubbing his belly and doing some ritual? Does anyone know what this is!?!!?
I know it's creey we took a pic, but we saw this everynight!

Saturday, March 3rd:
Woke up after a good nights sleep and decided to go down by the pool, but before we did that we explored the beach going in the different direction we normally go.
Gorgeous

Waves crashing further down!

Sick of our ocean front view yet?

After exploring that way, we came back to the pool and laid out there for an hour or two. Got showered and had a bite to eat for lunch and then walked down the road  to the Intercontinental Hotel to book a snorkeling/island excursion for Monday! By the time we finished doing that it was time to pick up our rental car!! We rented from Charlies and have it until we leave! Mom left the parking lot with her parking brake on so that car was making a loud noise!! Haha, after we got that figured out we were on our way with a mission to rent bikes and go on a little adventure! Drove down past Carolina to where all the locals hang out during the weekend with a lot of places making chicken on a stick, fried things, and smoothies! We rented two bikes and road along the boardwalk by the beach! Really great and pretty ride!
On our bike ride!

Boardwalk!

Scenic Ride!

We loved it!

Rode about 20 minutes one way where we could see a heavy rain storm coming our way! There was a rainbow trying to like come up out of the ocean! Really bizarre and awesome!
 Look closely- two rainbows?

Bizarre and awesome!

We turned around and avoided most of the rain, just a few sprinkles! Returned our bikes and got a pineapple strawberry smoothie and walked around a bit!
Cool map!

One of my favorite photos from the trip!

Blurry.. whoops!

Local hangout!

Then decided to drive our car further past where we rode our bikes and saw more beaches and went to the town of Loiza and turned around. Fun little adventure! Went back to the apartment, played yahtzee and then got ready for dinner! We had a few drinks and drove down the road and had dinner at Platos, another authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. We had chicken stuffed with plantains and rice and beans. We also ordered their special, a bacardi drink that had like 5 kinds of bacardi in it! It honesty was the strongest drink I've ever had in my entire life!! It was like taking a shot with every sip! We were lame and had to add more cranberry to the drink!!!
Our rental car!

Delicious Fried Cheese

Strongest drink ever!

After our good dinner, we went over to El San Juan Hotel and hung out there, people were all dressed up and dancing in the lobby, very entertaining!! Eventually went back to the apartment and got some sleep.

Sunday, March 4th:
Woke up today and got ready to go to El Yunque, the only national rain forest in the United States! We drove our rental car there and stopped at places on the way to take pictures! Saw La Copa Falls, and then went to an observation tower that overlooks the rain forest! Great view!!

Rain Forest!

After we drove a bit further into the park and parked our car to start some hiking!! It was kind of raining (It is the rain forest!) so we went into the gift shop and mom bought a poncho because of course she didn't want to get her hair wet and we didn't even bring rain jackets to Puerto Rico. Of course once she bought it and when started hiking, about ten minutes later it wasn't raining anymore!!
Mom reenacting Debbie's fall in Europe while hiking the Alps!

El Yunque Poncho

Gorgeous!

Love it!

Thought  should climb over the rocks!

We look La Mina trail which followed a stream/waterfall for quite awhile! Eventually we heard loud water crashing down and descended quite a bit where there was a big waterfall!! People were swimming under it, but I didn't want to be all wet either and it wasn't that warm in the rain forest. Felt quite nice actually!
The Falls!

Bridge over!

Really great!
I made mom pose- someone was hiking with a giant cooler! It wasnt a paved or smooth surface! Hilarious!

More trails!

Better view!

We then continued the trail and went onto another one and eventually after awhile arrived at another parking lot area and we tried to walk along the road back up to where we parked our car! Mom didn't think we were going on the right way and I wasn't exactly sure either! We kept walking and made it to a place where there was a restaurant. We stopped just to rest a bit and have some snacks we brought along. The guy said about a 20-30 minute walk still up the road to where we parked our car! We kept walking and about 5 minutes later were at our car! Phew!!!! Then decided to drive further up into the rain forest and explore more! Drove all the way up 191 until it dead-ended and we turned around. Just drove through and enjoyed the weather and surroundings with our windows down!
Definitely a local hangout spot- we stumbled upon this after driving on some random roads!

Kept driving and took a few different roads and eventually ended up in Luquillo and we walked on the beach there where there were a ton of locals!

Great beach!

After that we decided to make the drive back to our apartment and call it a day!

Monday March, 5th:
Woke up early and walked down to the Intercontinental to catch our shuttle to go to the east coast to the town of Fajardo for our snorkeling/island adventure on Icacos! Tried to nap on the way there and before I knew it, we were pulling into the marina. Met a lot of other people there, took off our shoes and we were on the catamaran and leaving out to the sea!  Free rum punch or pina coladas the entire time!

Don't think that boat is supposed to be there

Sailing away!

Storm?

Sailed out to a private island where there were a few other catamarans doing some snorkeling there. Had nearly two hours there, but once we got there there was a big downpour of rain! Only lasted for less than 10 minute and then it cleared up and was extremely sunny! Guess that's the Caribbean!

Storm passing by!
Our catamaran!

Can never have enough jumping photos!
My turn!
Getting back onto the catamaran for lunch!

Love this one

Great water colors!

Having some drinks!
Got off the boat and walked on the beach some and around the corner! Met a few people on the island, got back on the boat to get my camera and then walked some more! Took photos and returned to the boat and everyone was back on the boat and it was time for our lunch! A really good one too! Create your own sub sandwich with a lot of veggies and options! Fresh fruit too! Met two girls who became friends while traveling in SE Asia (Bali) and they were meeting up to travel again! They are going on a Mediterranean cruise in May leaving from Venice! Going to be awesome! After lunch we sailed to another area while on the top deck getting some sun! Went to a reef where there was an even better snorkeling part! We got our flippers and snorkels and masks and jumped in! Saw a lot of different fish and a large school of fish with bright blue on them! We fed them leftover bread they had on board! Was really cool, pretty good reef! Although honestly not as good at Honduras!
Snorkeling spot!

Nice reef- great fish!

Sailing back!
Eventually got back on the boat and talked to the new people we met! Met a pilot for Iberia Airlines who was here for 3 days on a stopover! He was from Spain and mostly flies to US and the Caribbean. Eventually headed back to the port after a lot of sun. They fed up chips and salsa, pistachios, apples, cheese and bread on the way back too. They did a really great job! The name of the catamaran was Spread Eagele II. We asked why that name and they said there were kids around so they couldn't say! Haha! Also asked what happened to the first one and no response! Hahaha! The crew was really nice and friendly! On our way back into the port we passed by a green area that had A LOT of iguanas! They threw some cut up fruit over at them and they all ate it! I mean we saw at least 20 of them! Tried to nap on the bus ride home. I definitely got a lot of sun to say the least! My sunscreen didn't go on evenly! Made it back to Isla Verde where we were staying and showered got freshened up.

Not good
Later we drove our rental down to a very authentic Puerto Rican restaurant; Chili's! Haha! We had a gift card so figured we could use that! Came back and were exhausted after being out in the sun all day!

Tuesday, March 6th:
Our last full day here in Puerto Rico! Trying to avoid the sun since my back is rather burnt! After lunch decided to go on a bike ride! Drove our car down to where we rented bikes last time, but wanted to go further down where there was a boardwalk and nicer bikes to rent during the weekend when we were there. Well it definitely wasn't as busy during the week and we couldn't find those places to rent bikes! So we just ended up driving and enjoying the weather with our windows down!

Beach we found

Hilarious!

Our lil rental!

We love planes

Stopped here for smoothies and fried cheese!

Stopped at a beach and on the way back we stopped to get a smoothie on the side of the road, went into a gift shop, and even bought a thing of fried cheese which would have been better if warmer! Pretty good though! After that we decided to drive back to the apartment and freshen up and then something completely unexpected happened. We were locked out of our apartment! We had been locking the right lock, but the bottom one somehow got locked (probably because of the turning of the handle) and we could NOT get it open!!! We tried for at least thirty minutes!!!
We tried and tried and tried!
Eventually we called Leo who dropped us off at the apartment and he finally found a ride to our place two hours later! We snacked and went down by the pool and beach while waiting. I mean it wasn't that bad at all, but just kind of frustrating. We tried a hair pin in the lock and everything. The key fits it just never turns the lock! So he eventually got here and couldn't open it either and then we used a credit card and it magically opened! I thought of that earlier too, I just never tried it!!! It's worked before at Jason's apt before so I don't know why I didnt try again!! Well it all worked out and we are back in the apartment! Showered and freshened up! Going to head to Old San Juan on our last night. Maybe go to the Don Q little factory/store and grab dinner down there! Flying home tomorrow evening! Walked around more parts of Old San Juan, went into a few shops, got a flag patch for my backpack and had some dinner!
Old San Juan at night

Square we found

Another cruise ship was at port- Holland America! I'm sure we will watch it sail past with our amazing view from the apartment! Saw three cruises sail out to sea last night!

Wednesday, March 7th:
Our last day here!

Got everything all packed up, had leftover food and eventually got out of the apartment by 2:00 to go return our rental car. Met Leo at the rental car agency, got our money deposit back and gave him our keys.

Love this car
Took a shuttle to the airport and printed our boarding passes. Went right to our gate since we weren't checking our bags, explored a bit in the airport and ended up buying four bottles of Don Q Rum!! Whoops!! Bought little traveler bottles too! They made an announcement that we could check our bags for free if we wanted, so we decided to so we didn't have to worry about putting them overhead and transferring them in Atlanta. Very good idea, glad that happened! Look at our plane!!
Our plane!
Got on the plane and I did not realize it was such a long flight. Guess down there I was all excited! Took nearly four hours to get to Atlanta! Mom and I enjoyed some drinks and eventually made it to Atlanta.
De-licious!!
Had dinner in Atlanta and got onto our flight back to Illinois. Much shorter flight since I napped. Landed, got our bags and made the drive home. Great trip! Nothing went wrong and got some great weather! Can't believe how quickly a week goes by! Happy to be in a tropical place, and a place I've never been!
